what's weird is that as soon as i have an instrument set to channel 2. it won't show in my outputs within kontakt. i get no levels moving. whether it is set to output 1 or output 2 or whatever. i get nothing. no sound and no levels moving. this leads me to believe it's something within kontakt, but what? there's not all that much else i could change. maybe somewhere in settings to activate multi channel support or something?

OK; this means you are NOT supplying MIDI information over MIDI channel 2, it's that simple. And this leads me to solution that you need to change your keyboard's global MIDI channel. Tip: please try this. Load a Kontakt instance with instrument on MIDI channel 2. Set it to whichever output you want (that is, if you have your outputs in Kontakt set for multichannel operation). Now, in Reaper, select All MIDI Inputs->All Channels, as above. Now, open Virtual MIDI Keyboard in Reaper, and set it to channel 2. Try clicking on it. Is there any sound?

I guess "ALL MIDI channels" sets.... all the other options.. duuuh. i'm going to use that one from now on. still i'm stuck. looked through the options. couldn't figure it out.

hmmm no, no sound if i do that with virtual keyboard. set my kontakt one sintrument midi channel 2 output 1. nothing. as soon as i switch it to channel 1 in kontakt, all of a sudden i get sound. my all midi inputs was set to all channels also. in the virtual keyboard there's a spot to change midi channel also. changing this made no difference, both with kontakt instrument set to channel 2 and with it set to channel 1, behaved the same way.

well, i tried this on SONAR and it worked out fine. I think i;ll try reloading reaper again. and restarting my instances of kontakt. maybe that will somehow change something somewhere.... hopefully it will.

Try with reinstalling Reaper then, yeah... I wonder if it will work. It's crazy if it doesn't, it works for me, and I presume many others as well.

ok, i opened up reaper again, and just right away in a fresh project opened up a kontakt, and it behaves with the VMK as you'd expect. so i think my issues might be solved here.... weird. ya it works fine in this new project. holy crap all of that for basically nothing. but, ok, here's another question, now i'm going to have different midi notes playing different instruments from my kontakt, some sustain, some staccato or whatever, but they will all reside in the same track. is it possible to have some midi notes a different color from other ones, so i can see which is which just by looking? it's not such a big deal if i can'ti guess, but it would be nice. i'll try going back into my original project and just reinitializing my kontakt instances. do you think it could have been because i had multiple kontakt 4 effects poen for multiple tracks? i wouldn't think so, but that was different from the new project i started. anyways i'll find out soon enough i guess.

Yeah. You can use MIDI Editor like this: Set Filter Channel to ALL, and Color to CHANNEL. This way you'll have similar image to mine You will need a set of keyboard commands to make switching to different MIDI channels easily. I have it set up very logically this way: Just remember: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 A B C D E F. Easy!

oooooo very nice. i think i'm going to set it up that way also. idk, i'm still perplexed a little at my original problem though, because i have reopened my original project, and strangely enough, the same thing is happening. i think there must be something off of a bug like nature that's in that project somehow. what sucks is i have a bunch of midi in there already i want to keep and reaper doesn't allow for multiple windows for multiple projects so i can't just click and drag the midi files. how can i just import the midi from that project into a fresh one that isn't all screwed up in some miraculous way?
