I'm having trouble doing this for some reason. i know reaper can do this though. what i'm trying to do, is to have my kontakt VST be an fx on one track for say, Cellos, and then have that kontakt FX loaded up with multiple different variations of the instrument being played. i'd like all of these to be mapped out to separate midi channels and so that way, i can edit my midi track and make certain midi data (the midi bars there) map out to individual channels so i could get my Cello all edited in the same track which makes for neat editing. my trouble is, that when i put my second instrument outpu on same output but for channel 2, i can't seem to get it to play. i tried setting my midi input through my Edirol UA-25EX to channel 2, and i get no sound, same if i change one individual midi note to channel 2. i must be doing something wrong, but i can't quite figure it out.

You need to select the midi channel for each instrument in kontakt too. But why not use cello(all) and change expressions with key-switching instead? (if you're using the kontakt lib, that is)
I have just the thing for you. Kontakt 3.5 (I hope you're using 3.5) template! If the template doesn't load Kontakt correctly, just open the file in Notepad, and edit the name of .dll on line 50 to the name of your 32-out Kontakt .dll. Inside this template, you have a folder track for Kontakt, 16 audio tracks (4 of them are auxes), and one MIDI track. MIDI track can transfer 16 channels of MIDI data, so this means that you just need to set each instrument you load in Kontakt to the next MIDI channel, and then record your MIDI data on THAT channel - either with your master keyboard, or using piano roll. I don't know if output settings that I made for this 32-out .dll are preserves. I've created 12 stereo tracks (plugin outputs 1-24) and 4 stereo auxes (plugin outputs 25-32). Please take a screenshot of outputs in Kontakt after you successfully load this template, and post back!
anybody? I must be missing something, because reaper has the ability to specify channels for midi notes. i'm just not sure why changing channels in kontakt isn't adding another instrument. could it just be that i need to have a different output for every channel? if it's that, then i could do it that way. but i seem to recall in other DAWs that i could use the same input but different channels for different instruments within kontakt or any other VST. i guess i'll try it with individual outputs for every channel, but that seems much more cpu heavy for me, and my computer is not the biggest beast.
i don't have kontakt 3.5 though is the downside. so not sure if that will work for me. i'll fiddle around with it some more i guess, and see if i can figure it out. hopefully i will have some sort of success.

If you have Kontakt 3 the upgrade to 3.5 should be free. For the time being, just try editing the .TrackTemplate file, and search for .dll, and then rename it to the name of your Kontakt 3 dll which has all 32 outputs activated.
if I understood correctly, you're trying to do one of the most easy task in REAPER, and general in DAWs. I never seen something easier than this. just set the Cello track as a folder of the MIDI tracks. (and the last MIDI track as the last track in folder) you can edit each note with different MIDI channel to get multiple sounds. (if you VST support multiple MIDI channels.)
