Quick noob color change (gradient) question

Hi- First off, I know nothing about graphics! I have GIMP, and I'm happy to use its Help, but I don't know the terms to use to find what I'm looking for. I have some toolbar icons that have colored images when they're toggled on. Let's say the image uses gradients of red and I want to change it to gradients of green (assuming I'm using "gradients" correctly -- shades from light to dark). Is there a way to tell GIMP to use the same "gradients", but replace the color being "gradiented"? I've figured out how to replace one color with another, but what I'm talking about is neither a solid color nor a solid object. It's not worth it for me to do anything on a pixel-by-pixel basis, but if I could do what I want fairly easily these icons would be easier on my eyes with my current theme. I have not used GIMP but I would think there should probably be a function or tool to change the hue of your icon. That would change your overall color and should not change the gradient levels. Look in your HELP for something along that order. Hue, changing hue, etc...

I use GIMP as well and here is how you do it! 1. Select the part of the icon you want to re-colour using the select tool. A good trick to know here is that if you hold shift while selecting it will add to your selection, and holding control will remove from your selection. You can use these two functions to only select the parts of the icon you want to re-colour. 2. Once you have selected the exact parts of the icon you wish to re-colour, right click in the selection then go to colour > colourise. Here you can adjust hue, saturation, and lightness (i think those are the parameters). You should be able to change it to any colour you like with a bit of practice and fiddling around with the parameters! I often use this trick to modify theme elements that I have stolen from other themes.

Perfect, worked great! Thanks guys. I actually used the "Select by Color" tool, and that made selecting only the areas I needed even easier. I might have danced around quite a while before I came up with "Colorize", but that was just what I needed. Thanks again- -Susan
