bootable os 9 cd on mirrored drive door g4

Has anyone still using 9.2.2 solved the problem of creating a bootable OS9 CD for installation of OS 9.2.X on the mirrored drive door G4's released at the end of the summer 2002? I'm using a dual 1GB with Mix Plus, and if ever the system gets cranky, which happens, and a system reinstall appears necessary, we're talking a half day's work or more to maneuver through Jaguar and the rest just to get 9.2.2 up and running again. Anyone know how to do this more simply? Anyone know if it can or cannot be done even? Apple is adamant about there being no such solution, and AppleCare Sweden today claims there will never be another minute's support given for OS 9 in any guise. Help!

I don't know about the CD-I've had no luck with that one either, but I did manage to make an OS9 only hard drive. I put a second IDE drive in my new MDD 1Ghz machine. Initialized it with the OS X CD's. The CD's won't let you install only OS9, so you have to go through installing OSX first, and then installing OS9. Then, simply throw away anything that doesn't say "OS9" in it's folder name. You should now have a bootable OS9 hard disk. This seems to be working for me, allowing you to have one completely independent drive for PT5.1.x, and another for PT 6. Plus, you get plenty of extra space on a seperate drive for video files or personal documents you might want to keep off the main system drive. rcm

One thing to remember is that a lot of OSX is invisible so only deleting the visible OSX folders has no real advantage. Anyway why throw OSX away? You are going to have to get used to it anyway. To make a bootable OS9.2.2 CD/DVD to be able to reinstall just OS9.2.2 if life gets funky is quite staightforward. Use Apple Utility Disc Copy to create a temporary Disk Image of the size required then copy the OS9.2.2 system folder (Alt Drag) and any other OS9 folders you want from the hard drive into the disk image. Then use Toast to burn a Bootable Mac Volume. You will then be able to boot from this CD/DVD. You can then delete the system folder from the Hard Drive and drag over the System Folder from the CD. The System Folder will remain 'blessed' but you may well loose any aliasing you have set (for example in Launcher, if you use this). As this System Folder plus any other folders you copied on to the CD/DVD were nice and clean when you created the copy, then this is just as good as a clean install. You will keep any Plug-In authorizations as these are hidden on the Hard Drive. If you really wanted to get rid of OSX completely then if you use the above method to copy the Applications (OS9) and the Documents Folder on to your bootable CD/DVD, then you could boot from this and then reinitialise your hard drive, using the Drive Utility on the CD/DVD, (to get rid of everything. Your Authorizations should still be OK, but personally I would De-Authorize any Floppy Authorizations). Now just select all your folders on the CD/DVD and Drag over on to your Hard Drive.

I thought I might touch on OSX and using the above technique to create an 'easy restore' disk Image . I have been unable to create an OSX Bootable CD/DVD but using Carbon Copy Cloner it is easy to create a Bootable clone of an OSX volume on a Firewire drive. I create 'fresh installs' using the above methods before every session on our systems so that I can be confident that our clients have clean and predictable (stable !!) systems.
