Problem with Pioneer 104 and windows xp

I recently installed a new hard drive and put windows xp on it. Everything works fine, but when I burn a dvd or do a full erase on a dvd-rw it gives me an error. It always fails right after initializing the disc. Anyone know what the deal might be? I aldeay installed the newest aspi drivers and went through the full list of windows updates. My system runs fine under windows 2000. Here's my system setup: epox8k7a amd xp 2000+ 2 hard drives on one ide cable pioneer 104 as master on cable with a dvd-rom nothing overclocked untill i get it working again...

Deactivate DMA for the DVD burner.

I tried disabling dma and went with pio mode 4 but it still wont burn a disc. Strangely, the full erase now works though. Here's the error code in Primo: "Error -10 at Sector 816 - Command:2A Sence:FF ASC:02 ASCQ:04" Anyone else have any ideas? I'm on the verge of returning to win2000 very soon.

Then return to Win 2k. Win XP doesn't have any advantage anyway.

I couldnt find an exact match for that status code, but I believe it to be something similar to 'No Seek Complete' which basically means is having a hard time focusing on the correct disc sector. Is the disc scratched or anything? Does this happen with all discs?

I tried 2 new dvd-rw's and 2 dvd-r(riteks which are now in the trash). I'm going to try switching the burner to the secondary ide channel when my current download finishes. If that doesnt work, I'll be reformatting tonight. Thanks for the suggestions from everyone.

If your using Prassi primodvd, go to the tools------------->options----------->general tab, set the speed to 1X, then set record, and verify every round. then close, restart and when your back up, check to make sure the 1X is still there. if you set the speed in the full app window to 1X, sometimes that doesn't work, because for some reason it will still burn at what it wants to. If you check your log file details you may see that the program is trying to burn the disc at 4X, 8X, or 16X. It wont tell you that untill after its made a coaster. If it gives the error codes right after it initializes and starts to burn (say from 1-20 mb). its a speed problem. hope that helps.

Buy Norton Ghost or any other tool to create an image of your full system partition Then, format the full system parition and do a clean basic installation. Then just install your burning software, and test. If it changed nothing, you can come back to your old system in less than 4 minutes. If it solve it (what is often the case with a clean install), you know what you have to do. XP works without problem for me, and is a lot more reliable than 2K, at least for my use (24/7)

I have a 104 drive with XP and have not had any trouble since day 1. It's always worked great. I've also heard a lot of people say to switch to PIO mode. This just sounds insane to me but apparently it's some "workaround" from Pioneer tech support. I say it has something to do with an incompatibility with the chipset on the motherboard. I have an Asus P4B systemboard with a P4 1.4Ghz overclocked to 1.7Ghz with XP and have not had an issue at all running the drive at the faster default DMA mode.
