Engine Numbers

Y'all Have just picked up a 1992 440 Li 1.6 - what can you all tell me about this my first DIY-able Volvo. Had a V40 once but been mostly been on the spanners with the other cars from Tollhattan and the occasional Bavarian motor. This one is for my son as a learner. I need to know the engine classification as it seems to be running fast - all the time as oppossed to hunting. Cheers
